Viscosupplementation is a medical procedure for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee or other joints in patients whose pain has failed to respond to conservative approaches. Injections can be an alternative to Knee Surgery, while others rely on these injections for relief from chronic pain caused by an Injury Or Osteoarthritis. Often used to stop the pain, some may know this procedure to be called hyaluronic acid injections.
Brand names of viscosupplementation solutions include Hylagan, Supartz, and Synvisc – all of which we use at Unique Pain Medicine. During the procedure, a thick gel with a natural protein, hyaluronan, is injected into the knee joint to provide lubrication and reduce inflammation. We offer joint pain injections in our Manhattan and Brooklyn locations. Call 929-363-0303 for more information.

The Hyaluronic Acid Knee Injection Procedure
Viscosupplementation works by artificially supplementing the fluid in the joint which increases the viscosity or thickness of the lubrication. After proper sterilization, a needle is placed into the joint under live ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance. A pre-filled syringe of viscosupplementation is then injected into the joint to help loosen the knee and reduce friction thereby decreasing pain, minimizing inflammation, and improving motion. This artificial lubrication will ideally “save” your knee from further deterioration, and help you to avoid surgery.
Conditions Treated With Hylagan
Osteoarthritis, knee, and hip pain are common for many adults in the United States including athletes, weekend warriors, and workers who have spent years on their feet. The degeneration of cartilage and tissue within the joint often begins as a subtle discomfort and leads to severe pain as time goes on. While knee and other joint injections cannot reverse osteoarthritis, they can help reduce the debilitating symptoms of pain and inflammation associated with it. Conditions include:
- Knee osteoarthritis (OA) and degeneration
- Hip osteoarthritis (OA) and degeneration
- Shoulder osteoarthritis (OA) and degeneration
- Rotator cuff syndrome
